we are working on expanding our writing to give more depth. We used the sentence a mn walked up a hill and looked out at the sea.
A man walked briskly up a steep hill on a cold winters morning, the gentle crunch of snow from under his boots filled the silence as he finally reached the peek. The air was empty as he gazed far over the grey, motionless sea. He looked around desperately he needed that key, now his life depended on it.

Carter Observatory
On Tuesday the Year 7 & 8's trekked off to boldly go where no other School has gone before......the Newly re-opened Carter Observatory. We were treated to an exciting workshop which looked in detail at the different conditions, and statistics of each of the planets in our solar system.. Did you know that Pluto is now called a dwarf planet - and there are at least 35 other dwarf planets out there which are roughly the same size as Pluto!! After the workshop we went into the planetarium, this is a high-fi digital movie theater where the ceiling is the screen and you feel as though you are flying through space! We looked at the physical stress astronauts go through when in space , and at our very own unique view of the night sky. The photos were amazing and the educators were really interesting. We came back buzzing with questions and debating the existence of extra-terrestrial life in the universe!
Another knowledge gathering success!
Carter Observatory
We went to the Carter Observatory, It was very fun. We watched a show on what it is like on the moon and what it's like to be an astronaut. Then we watched how we could spot stars at home as well as Mars and Jupiter. Then we went to the class room and looked at some interesting facts.
Did You Know:
- Pluto is now called a Dwarf planet because there are lots of other planets in our Solar System that are the same size.
- All the star signs are originally created from the stars in the sky.
- You can find which way is North with the stars (Southern Cross)

Science Fair
This term everyone in year 7/8 syndicate are doing a science fair. My question is ' Does Caffeine Effect Your Hand/Eye Coordination?' I'm on task and have completed my experiment.
1.6 people each had a turn of throwing 12 balls into a hula-hoop, to see how many they could get in.
2.Next they drank a caffeined drink.
3. They waited 15 minuets.
4.Finally they each repeated the first step to see if they improved their score.
A majority of the people did improve there score.
But I had a controlled group.
They did the same experiment but instead they drank Raro not Coke. Because Raro does not have caffeine in it they were not supposed to improve their score.
And most people didn't
It was a lot of fun.
Technicraft
Today we had a new rotation for technicaraft! I am now in I.C.T. We updated our blogs and learned some new ideas to post about.

'The Arrival' From page to stage.
The lights dimed and everyone went quite, the whole year 7/8 senior syndicate sat in the front rows of the Oprea House. We were on a school trip in town to come and see Shaun Tans 'The Arrival'.
The arrival is originally a graphic novel by Australian writer Shaun Tan. Which has been transformed int a spectacular and emotional stage play by the Red Leap Theater troupe. Leaving behind his wife and child, a man seeks better prospects in a foreign land. Baffeled by indeclpherable languages, perculer customs , cruious animals and dazzeling architecture, e serches for accomedation, food and work. 'The Arrival' is a heartwarming tale of hardship, humanity and hope.

The play is just like stepping into the book all the building are on were on wheels transforming into different shapes. The puppets were very lifelike how they moved and sounded. It was a magical land of flying ships, exotic birds and traveling balloons.

Time line
1828: Tohu Kakahi born in Taranaki.
1832: Te Whiti O Rongomai born in Taranaki.
1850’s- A peaceful settlement. People came to live here because the Europeans had confiscated their land.
1860’s- Europeans wanted the land so came in and started putting pegs into the ground. The Maoris didn’t like it so in the night they came in and took out the pegs and ploughed up the land so the Europeans could not use it as farm land. They did this in a non-violent way because that was not what they believed in.
1870- Parihaka gains its independence.
1870’s- The Europeans evade Parihaka and killed most of the people. Jailed some leaving them without food or water. And sent some to work in different parts of the country. Tohu Kakahi and Te Whiti O Rongomai were arrested and sent to jail for 16 months.

Homework week 5!
Massive Chile Earthquake
Huge 8.8 magnitude earthquake shatters Chile on Saturday, with at least 708 people dead .
Chile's president has sent the army to help the police combat looting on Sunday in the hard hit city, Concepcion. Some firefighters looking for survivors in a toppled apartment block were forced to pause because of tear gas fired to stop looters, who were wheeling off everything from microwave ovens to canned milk at a damaged supermarket across the street .
As tens of thousands faced a second night without drinking water, electricity or working toilets. President Michelle Bachelet said “Chile needs field hospitals and temporary bridges, water purification plants and damage assessment experts, as well as rescuers to help relieve workers who have been laboring frantically for more than a day.”
"We held onto each other in that doorway for almost three minutes," said Pablo Cuevas. "I watched a picture frame bang against the wall and wondered if the building was going to come down with us in it.”
The earthquakes epicenter was 56 miles North-East of Concepcion and a depth of 22 miles at 3:34 am on Saturday. Government-run television reported that 1.5 million
homes had been destroyed or declared unsafe.
Lots of people are donating to help this damaged, crushed Chile. Nobody will forget their loved ones but with the help from us maybe we can make a difference.

Homework week 4
This is my homework for week 4 I hope you like reading it :)
Task 1
Contemporary art can be defined variously as art produced at this present point in time or art produced since world war II. The definition of the word contemporary would support the first view, but museums of contemporary art commonly define their collections as consisting of art produced since World War II.
Task 2
This contemporary piece of art was painted by Pat Hanly. I like this painting because of the background and the fire on the side because of all the different colors that were used.
Task 3
Lex Benson Cooper is a famous New Zealand Artist. He was born in 1953 and lives in Napier. He is a contemporary artist. I like the painting he painted called Quarter Acre. It took him 16 days to paint it. I like it because of all the shading in the
fruits and the table. I also liked the background.
